Herculaneum is a small city, founded by Greeks in the Claudian age: 41-42 A.D. which had the same destiny as the small city of Pompeii during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D.. Smaller and less crowded than Pompeii, Herculaneum will offer you a glimpse into Roman life. The archeological ruins are better conserved than those of Pompeii, because at the time that Herculaneum was buried, it was engulfed beneath layers of solidified volcanic material 10 meters high on average. The very high temperature caused carbonization to occur, resulting, in an unprecedented manner of conservation that has no equivalent in Pompeii. Excavations started in 1738. During the tour you can also visit the archaeological site and the virtual museum of archaeology .
The archaeological excavations of Pompeii are the historical destinations most visited and well-known in the world. Nowadays the roman city preserves the outstanding heritage and signs of the natural disaster that made it immortal. The most recent intervention to excavate and restore the amphiteater, temples, streets, domus (homes) with paintings on walls, sculptures, gardens, ancient graffiti. Thanks to the passion of many archaeologists the ancient city shines again.
Vesuvius, high 1281 meters, is one of the most active volcanoes in western Europe
(the other is the super volcano of Campi Flegrei ), one of the symbols of this region. It is situated in the National Park and about 15 km from Naples. It is well-known for its eruption in 79 A.D., in 1631 and the last in 1944. In its crater there are several ‘’fumarole’’.
